"It's the platform, stupid!" NCI strikes again: biz.yahoo.com

NEC has licensed NCI's TV Navigator client and NCI Connect ISP Suite software to deploy information appliances. As a result, NEC can take advantage of NCI's open technology and business model to forge marketing partnerships with affinity groups and organizations to create its customized service. At the same time organizations can now communicate and share information with its members through a simple and easy to use information appliance. NEC will deploy set-top boxes that connect to the television to offer services such as electronic mail, news, home banking, electronic commerce and Web browsing.

And what kind of database servers do you think will be pumping out the content behind this network?

NEC will use smart card technology to attract new customers and forge affinity relationships with content providers or organizations by setting the smart card to a given home page when the user logs on to the network. Smart cards also enable consumers to roam to other set-top boxes within a network to access personal information and applications. Most importantly, smart cards allow NEC to extend the branding of its service and maintain a closer relationship with its customers.

Smart card? Set top box? Users roaming to other devices on the network? Gee, this sure sounds a lot like that silly NC idea Larry was talking about! "Crazy Larry" is reported to be doing just fine in his multi-billion dollar asylum.
