IN THE NEWS / TransCanada Proposes Gas Line Under Lake Erie

TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. is proposing a $162-million natural gas pipeline under Lake Erie.

"The Lake Erie Crossing, with an initial capacity of 700 million cubic feet per day, will provide access to growing markets in the U.S.," the company said Monday in announcing its facilities application to the National Energy Board.

The 98-kilometre Lake Erie pipeline is a "critical connection" between a $178 million gas-gathering facility in Ontario proposed by St. Clair Pipeline and the proposed $684-million US Millennium Pipeline in the United States, to run from Lake Erie to the New York city area.

"This application reflects our commitment to provide (gas producing) customers with the downstream connections they need to take advantage of lucrative U.S. northeast and mid-Atlantic markets," John Carruthers, TCPL vice-president pf business development said in a news release.

The metre-diametre Lake Erie connection to Millennium would be beneath the lake's waters at the Canada-U.S. border.

The 711-kilometre Millennium Pipeline proposal is currently before the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, aiming for a November 2000 startup.

The Millennium line backers, in addition to TransCanada PipeLines, are Columbia Gas Transmission Corp, Westcoast Energy Inc. and MCN Energy Group.
