"However, the chip rate is important because it is one of the
few differences between W-CDMA and cdma2000"
One of the few differences. That's your opinion.I don't think anyone knows yet because they are just starting with the standardizationwork.
One main difference is that W-CDMA is interfacing a GSM network. That
affects a lot including the mobiles. All the Layer3 protocols in the
mobile will be different. You seems to believe that the 3g standard
just will effect some small parts of the GSM or IS41 standard. You say
"the other 99% of the binders
are largely redundant with cdma2000"
I will not go in to details but I can give you one example why a 3g system is not just a broader pipe that effects the airinterface.
Today the signalling systems in the public network only support 64kbit/s for circuit switched traffic. What do you think will happen if you ask the core network for a 384 kbit/s if you haven't done a lot of work in the standardorganizations to specify how this should be done and designed this functions.I could give you a lot of more examples. The 3g system will affect
more or less all parts of the standard.
This is why a converged standard will be so difficult to implement even if they could agree on converging the airinterface. To have a network that is both backwardcompatible to IS-41 and to GSM will be
a huge task to achieve.QCOM is saying that they demands just that. It's
easy for them to say.Ericsson is probably the company that has done
most work on the GSM and IS-41 standard and they together with Lucent
and Nortel that are selling both IS-41 and GSM systems will have to do the work that QCOM wants to have done.I don't know how much QCOM has learned in this area but I doubt it is enough to make any impact on
this parts of the standards.
