In response to your post: a prime example of an insurance company going direct to consumers is GEICO. They sell insurance for less because they don't hire a pleura of agents to sit in offices all over the country and sell premiums. The direct sales of policies saves time, cuts on labor expenses and rental fees from offices buildings plus you can reach them 24 hours, a day not just 9-5 Monday through Friday.

As internet connections become faster with the spread of ADSL and the entrance of cable modems which will allow speeds many times faster than 56k modems, online transactions including shopping will become common place. There will be winners and losers. Those companies that provide a niche will be most likely to succeed. The future is bright and just getting started.
