Nortel Networks announces that Global One has
deployed its 100th Passport switch

- Investment in tens of millions of dollars, Passport 7000 now standard switching platform -

LONDON, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today announced that Global One, a joint
venture of Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom [NYSE:FTE - news] and Sprint, has deployed its 100th Nortel Networks'
Passport 7000 series multiservice switch in Seoul, Korea. These switches form the core of the Global One ATM-based global
network and represent an investment of tens of millions of US dollars. Total Passport switch shipments now exceed 10,000
units worldwide.

A phased, but aggressive, deployment of the Nortel Networks' Passport 7000 series began in mid-1997 and Passport is now
the Global One standard switching platform worldwide, providing frame relay and now ATM service to a global customer
base. Customers will increasingly benefit from better quality for frame relay services as traffic from a wide range of services is
integrated over higher speed trunks. Nortel Networks provides global services and support to Global One in 42 countries.

Jean Arnould, president, Global Operations, Global One, said: ''We needed the ultimate in robust, scalable switching
platforms to support multimedia services offered to multinational clients. We also needed a global support and services
capability. Our choice of supplier was a critical decision - Nortel Networks and its Passport 7000 series have met all our
expectations.''

The ATM-based platform will enable Global One and its shareholders, who have already deployed the same technology, to
offer customers leading-edge telecommunications services across a network which aims to ensure end-to-end seamless
support of voice, data and IP services. The program includes the launch of Global Frame Relay and connection of customers
directly on the new network, as well as the migration of existing traffic. By the end of 1998, the ATM-based network is
scheduled to be deployed in 42 countries.

With a network built around the Passport 7000 series, Global One can already offer its clients the benefits of truly integrated
services. Nortel Networks is defining the next generation of multiservice networking and provides a roadmap to Unified
Networks - I look forward to working together with Global One as we deliver the foundation for the future.''

Global One, the worldwide joint venture of Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom and Sprint, offers a single source for the
solution of voice and data needs of businesses, carriers and consumers around the world. Global One has over 1,400 points of
presence in more than 65 countries and had 1997 revenues of over US$ 1.1 billion.

The next generation of networking will call upon skills, technology and experience from many different disciplines to create
hybrid networks, optimised for different applications. These will be the Unified Networks of the future and will draw on
expertise in all areas of technology from Carrier Voice and Data networks and from Enterprise Voice and Data networks.
Nortel Networks is uniquely positioned to deliver Unified Networks solutions and is one of the only companies with the
expertise in all areas of these technologies, including IP, to build the Unified Networks of the future.
