I'm beginning to wonder if Lucent's announcements relating to optical networks are affecting the stock.

fiberopticsonline.com

I follow Fiber Optics Online as an easy means of getting info that's specific to that sector.

Since Lucent's SDL's biggest DWDM customer, their wins have to have some impact.

All speculation, to be sure.

It would be interesting to know what the estimated figure was versus actual.

Global WDM Market Growing - Ovum

LINTHICUM, MARYLAND, U.S.A., 1998 DEC 14 (NB) -- By Newsbytes Staff, Networking Roundup. Research firm Ovum has released a report saying carriers spent an estimated $1.2 billion on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) equipment in 1998.

The study, entitled "WDM Global Strategies for Next Generation Networks" is claimed to be the first ever on the global WDM systems market.

Ovum's research was based on purchasing information provided by service providers worldwide. Carriers also projected that their WDM spending would increase significantly in the future.

In fact, Ovum says WDM spending for 1999 is expected to increase over 1998 levels, and that carriers expect to shift purchasing patterns to favor higher-channel count WDM products.

Ciena Corp. [NASDAQ:CIEN] has been quick to claim that its fiscal 1998 revenue, and the research report's findings of worldwide market size, means that it has a 38 percent share of the worldwide WDM market, "and a significantly higher worldwide market share for 16-channel and above dense DWDM systems."
