Re: IBM/WDC agreement
According to Jane Conn, Treasurer at RDRT they should qualify at customers at GMR level in March quarter. When i asked her about WDC using IBM heads before then, she indicated that RDRT was planning on suppling WDC with GMR at the 6.XGB level. She also indicated that RDRT's customers were very impressed with the GMR prototype/samples that RDRT sent to them recently.

For the qtr ended 3/99, RDRT believes that the higher densities of MR, i.e. 4.3GB will be the "sweet spot" (i.e. the most profitable)

Bob Blair at WDC told me that he didn't expect RDRT to supply GMR to WDC until the middle of 1999. This was a concern to me (as a RDRT long), however, one doesn't know if he is downplaying the relationship with RDRT and emphasizing the relationship with IBM for political reasons (internal to WDC). During this same conversation, i asked Mr. Blair if rumors that the relationship with IBM had become strained were true - he didn't like the question at all, but he did not deny that it was strained as of late.

Today i left a message for Bob asking if the drives to be manufactured for Sony would be designed by IBM, the answer relayed by his assistant was it is too early to tell. I think that the same answer would be true for the HDD products in the desktop and enterprise areas; we still do not know what percentage will be designed by IBM.
