Y2K Tops Worry List Among CPAs

The debate is over and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has issued its ninth annual top ten list of technology issues that worry CPAs. Topping this year's list are the Y2K bug, the Internet, and general loss of privacy.

The bottom line, according to the CPA trade group, is that technology, rather than making our lives easier, may be making us more vulnerable.

The annual list is generated by CPAs involved in assessing technology for their clients, AICPA said. This year's group conferred for three days to identify and rank "technologies, issues or concepts expected to affect business, consumers and the economy over the next year," said AICPA in an announcement.

The group judged issues by their impact on revenue, organizational and personal productivity, and efficiency. Risk factors were taken into account.

The CPAs declared the most critical issue facing consumers and businesses this year to be the Year 2000 bug, which will cause unprepared computers and software to misidentify the year 2000 as the year 1900, with unpredictable and worrisome consequences. ...more.....
