Joss; I don't understand the Tick rules either, there seems to be
differences in what I've read. All I do is seat of the pants,
feel based on using the same source, it's just a feel for how much
it takes to shake the market up, or down, it's all so fast
any way so I don't see how I could do math on it.
I'm only concerned with it when it's WAY out of whack to the norm in respect the amount the index has moved..and I got a feel for the norm.

It seems easy for me to sense ( if I'm looking ) any heavy
moves taken by the specialist to "make a market" , the index just
don't fall as fast they normally would on the amount of negative
tick, I'm not looking for little micro thingys, I want it to
stand out, still I'm not good at seeing or feeling it the
other way around, it seems it would happen both ways and maybe
it does, but an big up tick , always seems to kick the index
up ( so far ) or I'm missing it.
Jim

TICK:

Tick is a short-term indicator that measures market strength. It is calculated on an ongoing basis throughout the trading day as the net difference between all NYSE stocks with last sales occurring
on an uptick (higher price than previous sale) and all NYSE stocks with last sales occurring on a downtick (lower price than previous sale). In essence, it is a moment-to-moment representation
of net advancing issues.
