Oops, you are right, Frank, I was off by an order of magnitude. That will teach me to do calculations while watching TV for what is going on with impeachment :-) The Hughes satellites operate have 16 transponders at 120 watts each, in the Ku band. I did my back of the envelope calculations on a per satellite basis rather than a per transponder basis, so your .7 to 6.3 Mbps figures are more accurate. I think with MPEG 2, DISH gets a little better than this, around 2-3 Mbps average, but of course that depends on the amount of motion in the program. I understand they use operators to dial the amount of compression up or down to optimize the amount of compression and avoid pixelization. Any DBS engineers on the thread? In either case, my point, with which I think you agree, is that interactive broadband through current satellite technology is not feasible.
