My understanding of a public key/private key ditigal certificate system is that the system does not care what kind of authentication device is used on the consumer end. In other words, where you have a pure key infrastructure, it essentially replaces the need for any biometric API, since the key structure itself is a common platform that can support any kind of authenticating biometric (or authenticating nonbiometric) -- the authentication occurs before the private key is presented.

I think this project does move the potential for biometric hardware forward in the province, but not software APIs.
