My first exposure was back in the early '80s. My first communication was little more than a test e-mail (maybe 25 characters or so) to another college (in California, I think), and the transmission time was something like 25 seconds or so. Amazingly fast in those days.

Golly you learned on a big machine; my first one was a 4K character (back before bytes were invented) IBM-1401.
