This is an interesting note, but not sure what it means. They talk about a merger, but I think it's a merger of DRAM operations. I read the whole story the link and it's mostly about the emerging standards for DRAM. This comes From Page One of Electronic News: December 7, 1998 Issue, but EE's links are never direct.

Anyway, a total merge of Fujitsu/Toshiba would be big news to the HDD industry.

BEAN COUNTING -- The possibility of a merger between Toshiba and Fujitsu (see story) stimulated speculation on a number of fronts, including how product lines could be reconciled and which executives might run the show. Another dilemma would be the name of the combined firm, which would have to reflect the names of both companies as well as its Japanese heritage. One wag came up with a ready solution: Tofu.

VEECO NABS $9M IN PROCESS GEAR ORDERS FROM JAPAN -- As the domestic market for equipment shows signs of improving, the Japanese today sent signals of a possible recovery there. Plainview, N.Y.-based Veeco Instruments received orders exceeding $9 million for etch and deposition equipment from "three leading Japanese data storage companies." The orders are primarily for cluster tool combinations of Veeco ion beam deposition , ion beam etching and physical vapor deposition products for high density magnetoresistive (MR) and giant magnetoresistive (GMR) thin film magnetic head applications. Shipments are scheduled for the first half of 1999. "This significant improvement in bookings from Japan is a result of our now being able to offer customers local applications and service support," said Emmanuel Lakios, president of Veeco's Process Equipment group. These equipment orders come a year after Veeco opened a direct sales and service center in Japan. Veeco: 516 349-8300 ext. 1472.
