Pioneer Introduces 20 New Soybean Varieties for 1999; Soybeans With Top Yields and Agronomics Earn Company 24% Marketshare DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. (NYSE: PHB - news), the nation's leading producer of soybeans, has unveiled 20 new soybean varieties for the 1999 growing season. Introductions include 14 varieties with the Roundup Ready* gene in maturities ranging from Group 0 through early Group VI. In addition, growers can choose new high-yielding varieties with resistance to diseases such as Phytophthora root rot, soybean cyst nematode and brown stem rot. Varieties with modified oil profiles for specific end-use markets also are new this year. The broad lineup compliments the record 26 soybean varieties introduced in 1998. ''Forty-six new soybean varieties in two years is a phenomenal achievement,'' says Don Schaefer, soybean product manager for Pioneer. ''We're producing more varieties than ever before to meet the diverse growing needs of our customers. And it's the new technologies, proprietary germplasm and leading research that help us deliver soybean seed of the highest quality, putting us at the top of the industry.'' For nine years, Pioneer has been the leading soybean seed brand in North America. In that time, the company has more than doubled its marketshare. In 1998, Farm Progress Companies named Pioneer leader once more, with a marketshare of 24.42 percent. The nearest competitive company followed with 10.68 percent of the market. The study involved telephone interviews with 36,409 soybean producers who farm over 250 acres of soybeans or corn. ''The Farm Progress research helps the industry understand how many acres are planted to Pioneer soybeans, but it's even more important to understand why,'' says Schafer. ''This year's fall performance data answer that question and help growers realize the value of Pioneer® brand soybeans. ''For example, this fall, Pioneer leader soybeans with the Roundup Ready gene held a 2.0 bushel-per-acre yield advantage over competitive Roundup Ready products, based on more than 4,000 comparisons,'' Schafer says. ''A 2 bushel yield advantage in soybeans is comparable to a 7 bushel yield advantage in corn at the 175 bushel-per-acre yield level. For growers, this translates to $11 in additional income from every acre planted.'' As the planting season approaches, Schafer suggests growers look carefully at the total value package of each soybean variety. ''Pioneer wants to make sure growers make sound seed selections, regardless of the 'hottest' traits,'' Schafer says. ''Our sales force is trained to help farmers match seed on a field-by field basis. We work with customers to consider the total genetic package so that they can increase their yields and obtain the greatest return on investment per acre.''
