Cisco Systems plans to buy between 5 and 15 companies a year and is particularly
interested in buying technology that can transmit video and voice
, the company's
chief executive said in an interview.

John Chambers revealed the plans during an interview with
the French newspaper La Tribune. Chambers ruled out
buying Alcatel, a French telephone equipment manufacturer,
although he said the U.S. maker of equipment to link
computer networks wants to raise its profile in France with
television advertisements for its Internet product starting in
January.

Cisco shares rose to a record 83-1/2 on Friday on
expectations that new products will help the company boost
earnings.
