RESEARCH ALERT - Enterprise software cos
started

NEW YORK, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Warburg Dillon Read analyst Andrew Roskill said he started coverage of five enterprise software companies Tuesday.

-- In a report, he rated Baan Co. NV (Nasdaq:BAANF - news) a hold. ''Baan's core ERP business continues to struggle and their reputation has been seriously damaged from recent missteps.''

-- I2 Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:ITWO - news) was started with a buy rating. Roskill set a 12-month price target of $32 for the stock.

-- He said in part that I2 was ''a 'pure play' investment in the supply chain management applications market.''

-- J.D. Edwards & Co. (Nasdaq:JDEC - news) was rated a buy, with a $34 price target. ''We believe that J.D. Edwards' business model has inherently less risk than other vendors.''

-- Roskill rated Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq:ORCL - news) a buy, setting a price target of $49. ''We view Oracle's large installed base and distribution channels as competitive advantages.''

-- PeopleSoft Inc. (Nasdaq:PSFT - news) was rated a hold. ''PeopleSoft has deviated of late from its traditional business model, increasing its risk profile with lower visibility and predictability of earnings.''
