"Glad you found a great auction notebook buy, Steve. Where'd you get it, and how competitive did you find the various auction sites?"

Dave, I ended up getting this at uBid. I only checked out 5 sites (uBid, eBay, OnSale, EggHead, and Haggle), and quickly narrowed it down to either uBid, OnSale, or EggHead (based mainly on a gut feeling a had about their sites, content and selection). Of these, uBid seemed to have the lowest prices, much lower than OnSale (seemed like a difference of as much as a couple hundred dollars on even the low end computers I was looking at; ie notebooks similar to what I got at uBid for $570 seemed to go for closer to $750 to $800 at OnSale.) On top of that, since I live in Michigan, OnSale tacks on 6% sales tax which was going to amount to $40 or so that I don't believe uBid adds on (I could be wrong, will probably have to wait till I see my bill), plus shipping thru OnSale was going to be $40 while it was only $13 at uBid.

Please note I was pretty much a rookie here and only serious watched these sites for only a few days before reaching my conclusions and making a move. I was kinda pressed for time, since some sites say allow up to a couple weeks for delivery and I wanted to make sure I had it in time for Christmas.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Follow up;
The good, the bad, the ugly

I bid on the lap top late Sunday evening.
It showed up at my house early this morning (Wed).
Pretty amazing service to me.

Problem;
It is a refurbished Compaq that came with no manuals, and I've never even touched a laptop before. Can't even find the on/off switch. Some LED's are on but the screen is blank (kind of like I'm feeling about my brain right now).

Came with Win95 CD, but obviously(?) must not be preloaded on HD.
Problem is, computer didn't come with a CD drive, so what good is a CD?

Thoughts to get me going? (Or call someone who knows what the heck they are doing :-))

Thanks, Steve

PS Maybe a place to find manuals???
