It'd be nice for Republicans if Clinton went quietly, but why should he?

Yep. Especially when Hyde himself has said that the House vote "merely accuses" the President! And in his words, we need the Senate to pass the judgement on the accusation! Why should Clinton resign before the Senate passes the judgement?!

Also, a President can be removed from office only if he is guilty of grave crimes that threaten the constitution and the democratic institutions of the land. This is no small matter and has to be thoroughly discussed and debated. After all, isn't it silly to expect any President to resign just because he was "merely" accused! ;-)

So, it would well be worth the time and the effort, unless of course, the President is being removed for trivial reasons.

But as the Republicans would have us believe, these are NOT trivial reasons! ;-) So, it is upto them to convince the public that it is worth the time and effort that will be spent in the Senate over the next several weeks... or months!
