Dumb question. Why does STB/TDFX have to stop making cards with nVidia chips? The way the timing seems to work out between product transitions, why not do both for a while?

SUn;

I have no inside information, just some experiance with two companies that I worked for and how they did the mergers.

They always make sure that all the major shareholders are in favor, and also they talk with their current customers to make sure this makes sense from their respective. If they do not get a good feedback they would reconsider the deal seriously.

You are asking a lot of questions that would never become public, and
for all the If's no one can answer a hypotetical questions.

I am just giving a benfit of doubt to the management teams of both companies. The stakes are huge. TDFX is going to loose their #1 and #2 customers with this announcement. STB will loose the access to any other chip vendors IC and have already pissed them off (nVidia). So it makes a good sense that we should assume that they did all the right things before making this big of an announcement.
