OSICOM BRINGS IP REVOLUTION TO CHINA
SANTA MONICA, CALIF. (Dec. 14) BUSINESS WIRE- Dec. 14, 1998--
Tangshan Cable Television Network and Osicom to Create China's First IP-Over-DWDM Network Using GigaMux Metro(tm) DWDM in Initial Contract Valued at $2.9 Million
Osicom Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:FIBR) continues to set the global pace in deployments of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) in metropolitan area networks (MANs). Today the Company announced that China-based Tangshan Cable Television Network (TCTN) has selected its GigaMux(tm) Metro DWDM solution to be the foundation for its new next generation IP-over-DWDM network.
TCTN's network build-out marks China's first deployment of public video and voice transport using Internet Protocol (IP) over DWDM fiber. This eliminates the need for intermediate protocol conversions, thereby lowering costs, increasing reliability, and simplifying network architecture. By using the universal standard of IP as a transport mechanism via GigaMux, TCTN will effectively extend its range of high-speed networking technologies.
An initial order for $2.9 million has been placed in connection with TCTN's new network build-out, with product shipments and system installation expected in Osicom's second quarter of next year. By deploying Osicom's GigaMux into their network, TCTN will have the flexibility and capacity necessary to expand their service offerings to include multimedia, high-speed data, telecommunications and Internet services, in addition to their conventional cable television service in 12 neighboring cities.
"We chose Osicom because they are the 'metro bandwidth authority'- the only company with a field-proven, reliable, and referenceable Metro DWDM solution," said Mr. Shiji Sun, Head of the Department of Broadcast for Tangshan. "Though we will be utilizing only a fraction of GigaMux's total 32-channel capacity with our initial cable television and telecommunications service, we will be well equipped to handle a dramatic increase in traffic as we roll out new data services in the near future."
Mr. Qingchen Zhan, President of TCTN, added, "We chose Osicom's GigaMux over eleven other potential solutions because of its distance and in-service expansion capabilities, as well as for its ability to transmit data bi-directionally over a single fiber. Osicom clearly presented the most flexible solution to meet our aggressive expansion plans."
The contract calls for Osicom's GigaMux to be used to transmit digital video and IP- based traffic over 13 nodes of TCTN's multiple-ring, fault tolerant, fiber-based network. As currently configured, the initial installation will transmit telecommunications and broadcast video programs on a single, bi-directional fiber at Gigabit rates transported over IP. Multiple redundant rings will protect the entire network blanketing an area of 12 cities. This new system will allow TCTN to expand into telecommunications, multimedia, data and Internet services, in addition to the traditional cable television service they currently provide. More specifically, this system enables the coexistence of multiple service offerings over a single fiber at a fraction of the cost of laying new fiber, and it establishes a foundation for convergent applications of digital video, voice and data.
"We are honored to be part of TCTN's effort to build China's first next generation IP-centric network. Our GigaMux DWDM solution will provide an elegant network architecture, eliminating an entire layer of traditional transmission equipment once needed to deliver data in its native format, without requiring translation into other protocols," said Dr. Xin Cheng, Osicom's president. "This landmark next-generation DWDM deployment further validates our technical prowess and the successful execution of our stated objective to expand our customer base into Asia, in addition to North America and Europe." More On GigaMux Product Line
Osicom's GigaMux line of DWDM transforms a single fiber from a dedicated, single-application medium into a versatile conduit capable of simultaneously transporting up to 32 independent optical channels. It increases the total bandwidth of a single fiber from 2.5 Gbps to 80 Gbps. GigaMux supports fault tolerant DWDM rings as well as point-to-point network configurations. It is protocol transparent and data rate independent in the entire 51 Mbps through 2.5 Gbps range.
GigaMux's breakthrough EPC(tm) optical and electronic sub-rate multiplexing technology provides 512 sub-channels with direct optical and electrical interfaces to customer premise equipment and carries voice, video and data traffic. Osicom's Dense Wave Division Networking (DWDN(tm)) solutions enable direct optical interconnection of high-speed data and telecom equipment, such as multi-gigabit switches and routers, in campus and metropolitan area networks (MAN). DWDN removes protocol conversion steps, eliminating the network latency that is a key barrier to widespread deployment of IP telephony and real-time voice and video. About TCTN
TCTN is an enterprise of the Department of Broadcast and Television of Tangshan, a government branch overseeing Television and Broadcasting business for the area. TCTN currently provides Cable Television services to approximately 600,000 subscribers of the 6.7 million population of Tangshan. Tangshan, located within the Hebei Province, is approximately 100 miles east of Beijing. About Osicom
