Personal Java coming to digital TV boxes......... PersonalJava starts driving consumer gear By Alexander Wolfe EE Times (12/15/98, 5:27 p.m. EDT) PALO ALTO, Calif. — Next month's consumer electronics show (CES) is expected to be a hotbed of news about the emerging generation of Web-centric appliances. Samsung will reportedly show off a Web-based phone it developed around PersonalJava software technology from Sun Microsystems Inc. PersonalJava is a downsized implementation of the Java application programming interfaces, designed to power small-footprint devices. Separately, Sun Microsystems Inc. today disclosed that it has snared Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. as the latest licensee of PersonalJava. Matsushita, which is best known in the United States for its Panasonic and Quasar brands, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sun "to further develop Java implementations for network-aware digital consumer electronics." Sun has been working to develop OEM interest in Web-centric electronics. That will help Sun with its separate Jini effort, which entails the creation of a new software infrastructure built upon Java language to let devices such as smart phones and PDAs identify each other automatically on the network, communicate and share services. Most immediately, the agreement between Sun and Matsushita appears to have been sparked by the move to digital TV in the United States. Indeed, the two companies plan to adapt Java for use in digital-television and audio-video equipment. Japanese consumer-electronics giant Sony Corp. has also been assessing PersonalJava for use in digital set-top boxes.
