They have driven it down on fewer shares. That's right! And to whose advantage is that? I mean, where is the MM likely to get the most "bang for their buck" on a currently thinly traded low volume stock? On the way up or on the way down down? Even discounting shorting, people bail as the stock drops based on emotion. Look at the spread! The MMs will make BIG money allowing people to panic sell at basement prices if they know buying is out there in higher ranges eventually. Again, look at the spread. You will almost always see the spread tighten before the Ask jumps. How much + volume will that take? That is the key question IMO. Theo;-)
