12-16-98 SK Teletech unveils first cell phone

SK Teletech, SK Telecom's handset manufacturing arm, has unveiled its debut product. Dubbed Sky, the digital cellular phone represents SK Telecom's bid to create a lever that it can use in negotiations with hard-nosed domestic handset manufacturers. The domestic handset market has been a seller's market where buyers like SK Telecom are at a disadvantage vis-a-vis manufacturers. To correct the situation, the cellular operator set up SK Teletech a few months ago with the assistance of Kyosera of Japan.

Against this backdrop, the first Sky cellular phone drew serious attention from other manufacturers. To make it competitive against existing products, SK Teletech designers have made it as light and small as possible and equipped it with several novel features. The Sky phone weighs 89 grams, including a slim battery. Company officials said their new phone, based on a power-efficient circuit design, can offer longer talk time on the same battery than other products. They also said the phone is small enough for users to hold comfortably in their hands. The new handset comes with a remote vibrator which operates when calls have arrived or the user leaves the phone behind.

Other features include a built-in flash memory which can store conversations for over four minutes, a PC hook up that allows users to edit phone numbers or put photos on the LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, and a multifunction key which makes it easy to choose functions from the menu. SK Teletech president Hwang Kyung said his company plans to produce about 30,000 handsets a month next year, delivering the whole output to SK Telecom for distribution to its customers.

Taichi --

This is no longer investing it is sort of like religious belief. Even Fed Ex is doing great never mind NOK.A which is up a staggering 300% on its old rubbish technology. QCO has got to get to over $100 to begin to catch up.

Sad.
