December 16, 1998 16:45 Aspect Telecommunications Responding to New Guidance Regarding In-Process Research and Development SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Aspect Telecommunications (Nasdaq: ASPT) announced today that it is responding to new guidance from the Securities and Exchange Commission to public accounting firms to revise current methods regarding in-process research and development charges. Although the company reported its second and third-quarter results in accordance with established accounting practices and the valuation provided by the company's public accountants, the new guidance was referenced in comments the company has received from the SEC related to a recent registration statement filing. Based on the new guidelines, Aspect anticipates substantially reducing the in-process development charge associated with the Voicetek Corporation acquisition completed in May 1998. Although Aspect has not yet determined the final outcome of applying the new guidelines, such a reduction of the in-process charge related to Voicetek would increase earnings for the company's second fiscal quarter and result in a corresponding increase in both the amount of intangibles as well as quarterly amortization expenses associated with the acquisition. Any such adjustments would be non-cash charges and would not affect Aspect's cash or liquidity position.
