I saw that article on the "vicinity card." It claims that biomeric authentication is not competitive with it, since biometric scanning is much more demanding than just carrying around a card that turns your computer on and off.

Of course, the card itself seems no more tied to an individual than the present password system, and provides no secure nonrepudiation for the system's security. In fact, I think it could be easier to steal than a password, if the password is appropriately protected.

I would agree it is noncompetitive with biometrics, but in the other direction. It isn't secure.
