In the pre-Internet, Bitnet era it was quite common for people to put a disclaimer at the end of the messages sent to some litserv lists. During the pre-web, early Internet days, when usenet newsgroups came into being, disclaimers were also used on postings to certain groups.

People seem to be more prone to put disclaimers at the end of postings when the posting is via e-mail and shows the node/IP of the sender. In this case, its as important making sure others realize the opinions/statements are only those of the poster as informing others the posting does not reflect the views of the person's node/IP [if an .edu, .gov, .org address].
