<Judging from your response, I don't think you understand the point I was trying to make. The point is that, given the nature of Winsock being a low-level device driver, there are technical performance advantages to integrating it into the OS. This is not the case with browsers. There are no technical advantages to integrating it. The code will not be any faster or better by doing so.> Judging from your response, I know you are misunderstanding my point. As a programmer, you are only looking at technical advantages, while the public in general and the courts are looking at advantages to the consumer. If 2 out 3 people find it more convenient to have browsing functions in the OS, than it is advantageous, regardless of raw performance. MSFT is selling software, not entering a theoretical speed contest of academia. I have heard talk of hiring programmers on this thread. I have found that many programmers in the New York area without an advanced degree in finance seem to find it impossible to understand that financial application users may prefer things that do not necessarily add to the technical integrity of the product. Many do not grasp the fact that we are not selling to application developers but financial product and presentation developers. Believe it or not, the guys in the least respected languages (visual basic) seem to get this more than the hard core C/C++/Java programmers - probably because they develop RAD apps with the client breathing down their neck. They are also able to charge top dollar for their services as well, especially if they have a diversified background and a proven grounding in finance. Take it from someone who has spent some of his hard earned money:-)
