Airtouch does have SMS service on their CDMA "powerband" system. I have used the web method of sending messages.

But, I think it is common practice (Airtouch) to charge an extra $5 a month to use this (the providers don't want it to cut into their regular airtime charges?)

Voicemail is far easier for most people. The only killer-app for text messaging I have seen so far are news bites, stock quotes, surf conditions, and computer servers that are able to "email page for help" when a system problem develops or %full status on the disks.

Only thing that will change that would be a voicemail-SMS recognition gateway or start carrying around a semi-portable laptop wherever I go.
