Nokia to invest about FIM 1 billion in mobile phone production in Bochum, Germany (December 21, 1998) - In 1999, Nokia will invest about FIM one billion to production capacity expansions in its mobile phone manufacturing plant in Bochum, Germany. In July this year Nokia announced that it would invest close to FIM 1 billion in a new mobile phone manufacturing and distribution center in Hungary and in production capacity expansions at the Salo plant in Finland. "This capacity investment to Bochum enables us to keep up with the growing demand for our mobile phones in Europe and also world-wide," says Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe & Africa. "More and more new subscibers are purchasing mobile phones as their primary communication device. And as the technological and lifestyle-related features of mobile phones continue to develop, those who already have previous models are upgrading them with newer ones sooner than before. These two factors - growing subscriber base and rising upgrade market - have made mobile communications the world's largest consumer electronics industry." In the beginning of December the cumulated production volume of all Nokia phones manufactured world-wide reached the threshold of 100 million units. This autumn Nokia has sold more than a million phones in a week during several weeks. Together with its interim results for the 3rd quarter of 1998, Nokia announced in October that it believes to have become the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer. The FIM one billion investment to Bochum includes several new assembly lines and the construction of new production, office and personnel facilities. The investement will more than double the current production capacity of the plant during 1999. The expansions will create a significant amount of new employment opportunities in the greater Bochum area, too. Currently the mobile phone factory employs over 1500 people. Nokia has currently eight mobile phone manufacturing sites in seven countries: in Salo, Finland; Bochum, Germany; Fort Worth, Texas, USA; Reynosa, Mexico; Manaus, Brazil; Beijing and Dongguang, China; and in Masan, South Korea. The ninth one will be constructed in Hungary in 1999. Final decision over the location of the new plant will be announced on January 11th. Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
