Dan, you speak eloquently on this issue. It sure is a nice change from the garbage postings of late. The assumption Brad lives under is that any help the government gives is necessarily good for the people. A conservative (such as myself) would say, look at the evidence and track record of the past. Has the government program reduced the level of poverty, crime, helped families? Develop serious metrics to measure the performance. If it fails, so be it. Admit that it failed and Try another approach, or a different approach. Look for answers first in the private sector. Then to government only as a last resort.

The case of social security falls into this realm perfectly. We know 401K's have been fantastically successful. Why not let the people control their own retirement money by putting it to work for the good of the economy and industry. If they feel capable to handle the risks associated with the market. Why not give them that option?

Liberals I see as not willing to look at programs with an open objective mind. Instead they view a government program as part of their emotional commitment to the poor or the downtroden. That's why when you ask the simple question. Can you demonstrate through objective evidence that the program has worked? They become very defensive and turn a blind eye to the evidence when it's contrary.

I would like to talk more on this subject, but alas I'm just a working stiff who is on the run. :-)

Best, Michael
