Oh, bletch. 60 years doesn't go back long enough, you know, David. Try 127 years, and the Civil War. You can argue against that one too, if you want, I've heard economists of a certain stripe make such arguments. Slavery would have died out on its own, for economic reasons, they say. I say that sounds a bit glib, as the south was booming at the time. The passions from that one haven't died either, and there was plenty of terrorism in the aftermath too. Not to mention other problems that are with us still.

Then, there's the tie in to the current situation, the Andrew Johnson impeachment for clearly political reasons. We'll see if the Chief Justice has any further comment on that in the days and weeks to come, he'll probably maintain a judicial reserve.
