Slider,

How about putting your research cap on and finding out about GIFI.
Gulf Island, as you know, fabricated the Texaco/Marathon Petronius platform module which has been sitting under almost 2000 feet of water in GOM since Dec 3. The 1996 contract for constructing the two modules amounted to $50 million. Using that as a starting point, the one under water should be worth approximately 1/2 that amount. If not recoverable, it appears GIFI would be well positioned to construct a replacement module. Your thoughts please or a contact where I may look into this. TIA

K

Signs, Portents, The Odds, and A gift of the Gods -

1. When the news is absolutely abysmal the smartest money buys 1st, the insiders who are in a position to know.
2. The next smartest money follow - value players.
3. The next smartest money then buys - institutions for their big clients (while their analysts are downgrading the stocks of course (see Platters post))
4. The next smartest money buys - mutual funds - when then turnaround becomes clearer.
5. Dumb money starts to buy - 21 year old money managers.
6. Dumber money starts to buy - momentum players.
7. Dumbest money buys - Widows and orphans who listen to breathless hard sell brokers, telling tales of lead pipe cinch riches.
8. 1, 2, and 3 gladly sell their holding to 5, 6, and 7.

The Book has been written buy the number 1's.

Since I am not so smart as as to buy at exact bottoms, I will not hazard a guess on precise odds. I just look at the signs and portents.

Just get me close, baby, just get me close. A gift from the Gods? Only time will tell if these insiders are complete boobs. The odds say that they are not.
