OK tax question for anyone:

If I own 1000 shares of stock XXX and it has a nice run up, but I don't want to sell until after the end of year, if I sell short 1000 shares of the same stock, I have effectively locked in my profits; can I do this and thus lock in my gain but also stall the tax bite until the next calendar year?
