There continue to be compatability problems for V.90 equipment. I have attached a notice from my ISP - Northwest Nexus - about performance problems with the 3Com Sportster because of incompatability with Lucent equipment. I just wish they had purchased their dial-up equipment from Ascend, 3-Com or Nortel, instead of Lucent. V.90 service update Recent conversations with Lucent Technologies, the manufacturer of our dial-up access equipment, have indicated that a new software release for our V.90 equipment is imminent. Details are sketchy, but we understand that this release will address some specific issues concerning the U.S. Robotics/3Com Sportster and Lucent's own LT WinModem. The Sportster and the WinModem have presented challenges to our technical support staff; issues with the Sportster have been the most daunting. Testing that we've done with our own Sportsters from various locations throughout our service area have yielded very good results; many customers have had the same experience. However, some users seem to get better performance when an additional initialization string is added to the modem information on their PCs. The special string addresses common problems in the negotiation of data compression, and significantly reduces connection drops due to loss of carrier or momentary drop-out. We have a group of customers with Sportsters who continue to experience sub-standard service, and we're very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. At this time, we don't fully understand what creates these problems. We're pressing Lucent for more information on these issues, and for details about what will be addressed in our equipment update. Lucent hasn't given us a formal release date for the software, but we're told it could come before December 25th.
