Nixon likely had the 1960 presidential election stolen from him- there is no real question about Illinois, with Texas, LBJ's home state being questionable. The 1964 Republican presidential candidate had "bugs" placed in elevators he was using. The press uniformly ignored his complaints on the subject.

Paranoids have enemies too.

Nixon's detente' or appeasement of the Russians was pretty much a failure. In the 70's, the Russians were active in much of Asia, Africa, and South America. Reagan countered that by supporting local forces, including Muslim rebels, that countered the communists.
