FYI: An impression from the Macintosh world. This is from a description of the new Macs coming out in two weeks, as posted at MasOSRumors: "-300-400Mhz G3 processors initially, 450 and 500Mhz versions following soon after. -512k L2 cache for the low-end model, 1MB for all other models. All versions should run at a 2:1 ratio. -100MHz main bus. -Four SDRAM slots, requiring 8ns SDRAM (necessary for any 100MHz motherboard). Supports up to 4GB of SDRAM with 1GB DIMMs. -Three 64-bit, 33MHz PCI slots. -One 32-bit, 66MHz slot on a separate bus, providing low-contention bandwidth for the 16MB ATI RAGE 128 graphics, recently tested as the second fastest graphics card available anywhere for Mac OS or Windows -- only slightly behind the nVidia RIVA TNT card (this was in AGP tests -- PCI may actually be faster for many uses, particularly 3D gaming, because PCI does not use main RAM for textures). 64-bit slots are entirely compatible with 32-bit cards -- without slowing the bus itself down. -Two standard 400Mbps Firewire (1394) ports, an additional two optionally available. -Four USB ports -One ADB port -On-board UltraDMA/33 bus, hosting UltraDMA drives of 6GB and up. -Separate ATA-3 bus for devices like CD/DVD (4x DVD-ROM will be standard on some models) and removable drives. -No floppy drive. -4Mbit IrDA infrared port -Beautiful El Capitan enclosure, sporting incredibly easy access to internals, four handles, and translucent "Ice and Dark Blue" plastics. The primary reason that El Capitan hasn't been seen here (or anywhere else) is that Apple has indirectly requested an embargo -- this embargo will lift as soon as Yosemites start shipping to resellers, so stay tuned." My point here is that we seem to be sort of off the OEM radar screen with Apple and the Apple buying public. This is a shame because Apple folks are famous for being willing to pay more to get more for their computer buck. Hal PS: Vegas, thanks for the italic/bold help.
