Year 2000 Wire/Unisys Helps Ready Georgia Prison System for Year 2000
BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 1998--The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) has selected Unisys to help ready its computer systems for the year 2000 date change.

The far reaching work on mission critical systems is being performed under three contracts worth a total of $5.2 million. Unisys will help GDC ensure the security and safety of the nation's seventh largest inmate population and its facilities throughout the state.

The largest contract involves two COBOL applications running on a Unisys enterprise server: Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS), and Food Services. The OTIS application will be renovated and tested. The recently developed Food Service application involves system readiness testing and documentation.

This application is used to manage the acquisition, distribution, and use of food products for the 84 GDC detention facilities.

Under a second contract, Unisys will determine the status of embedded systems at the detention facilities. Embedded systems contain internal programmed devices. The programmed code is just as susceptible as computer code to year 2000 performance.

Five risk areas will be examined: security (surveillance and control systems), lighting control systems, fire detection and alarm systems, medical equipment, and office, telecommunications and other basic service equipment.

The third contract for GDC is the inventory and assessment of 5000 multi-vendor PCs deployed in GDC offices across the state. Scope of this work includes inventory, assessment and development of a management database for use in determining corrective actions.

''We selected Unisys for these very important Y2K projects based upon the strength of their proposals, which included good project management, solid technical expertise and competitive costs,'' said Rod Coggin, director, GDC Office of Information Technology. ''In addition, the Georgia Department of Corrections has enjoyed a positive working relationship with Unisys for well over two decades.''

''Georgia is forward thinking in its approach to year 2000,'' observes Mary Kurkjian, vice president, Unisys Public Sector Year 2000 Practice. ''The governor and general assembly, realizing the urgency and magnitude of the issue, provided a special, off-budget allocation to attack the issue statewide.

''This allows individual agencies to prepare for the date change without sacrificing other IT projects or service delivery. We are pleased that the Department of Corrections has placed its confidence in Unisys to assist in its year 2000 efforts.''
