Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND) fell as much as 1 15/16 to 57 3/8. Insider selling at the network equipment maker has risen recently despite speculation that Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) may buy Ascend, said Frank Ponticello, a Prudential Securities Inc. analyst who covers insider activity. Ponticello said the insider selling may indicate Lucent won't buy Ascend, though Ascend's stock has been rising recently along with Lucent's in anticipation of a transaction.
