Russian forces on alert - Interfax quotes sources

biz.yahoo.com

<< MOSCOW, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Interfax news agency quoted military sources on Thursday as saying Russia had placed some naval and air forces on alert after U.S.-British air strikes on Iraq, but the Kremlin could not confirm the report.

Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Yakushkin said he could not confirm or deny the report that the units were placed on increased readiness on orders from President Boris Yeltsin. A Defence Ministry spokesman said he had no information about a specific command heightening the state of alert, but Russia's forces were ready as always to carry out any order. >>
