>>True Waco resulted in death but it was not the objective. In hind site it was of course a mistake but I heard nothing with regards to an altenative before the attack.<<

Ooops, sorry, my mistake......81 lives lost. Call it a willful disregard for the potential destruction of human life. The point about Waco that you don't seem to get is that there was absolutely NO reason to do ANYTHING. Eventually the entire group would have had to deal with a lack of provisions and come out. Those people died as a result of an overt act of this government authorized by the AG and ultimately Bill Clinton. I would suggest that you go the the Frontline web site and pull up the story on Waco and read the chronology of events, NOBODY had to die in that situation. Including the ATF officers.

pezz - <<OT>> if you don't see the attack on Waco as an attack against the administration's enemies then you don't know who the enemies are.

You need to look back into what was going on in the country at the time. The Waco situation could have been handled by simply arresting Koresh during his visits to town. Instead, the ATF, reveling in the anti-gun support of the administration, decided to make another showcase of what happens to those dangerous, right-wing gun owning, property-protecting radicals (the most radical part of Hillary's later-named 'vast right wing conspiracy').

The administration, fresh from the "let's get automatic weapons off the street" media blitz, had an opportunity to show the American people how "dangerous" the militia movements were, but they couldn't latch on to one that was really breaking any laws and they had blundered through the one attempt at the guy in Idaho - killing his wife in the process.

Along comes the complaint from the locals in Waco that this weirdo Koresh is now starting to mess around with guns because he thinks everyone is out to get him for his religious views. Here comes the ATF. Instead of simply pulling Koresh in, the ATF decided to execute a full-blown tactical raid - with cameras running, of course. When the Koresh folks (having been warned) started fighting back and the ATF found itself with more than they could handle, it turned into a siege and the FBI took over. We all know what happened after that, but the final results are subject to a variety of interesting speculations about who was at fault.

But, if the objective had been to apprehend Koresh for purported child abuse, they could have done it long before the ATF showcase raid. He spent quite a bit of time in Waco in the weeks and months before the event. And those "child endangerment" issues didn't even become big public issues until after the first aborted raid - by then the opportunity for showing us all the dangerous cults and their huge arms caches was missed.

One key objective of this administration was to take advantage of publicity at the time to punish those with some rather strong personal views of self defense (firearms ownership). When it blew up in their faces (literally), Reno had to take the responsibility for making the final call, while the source of the situation (the anti-gun political left White House) called it a tragedy.

Wouldn't want to be the next right-wing odd-ball religion with Clinton in the White House - would you?

Mr. K.
