For the state of the storage industry in the upcoming year see:

crn.com

I especially noted the trend toward increased density in recording and in storage. I also recall from one of my earlier posts that due to low margins and competitive pressure, storage manufacturers may find it cost beneficial to purchase research rather then fund their own.

While I understand that KM requires someone to "gap the points" at final assembly, I also would not be surprised to see further innovation and application here of something from KM. Myself, I'm skeptical of possible "sour grapes" about who maintain that all Ampex KM research is shut down and all the people were fired leading to the forgone conclusion that KM is dead. I will maintain an open mind with regard to KM and or a derivative of KM should circumstances warrent re-opening the research and applied engineering.
