And then the calls go against you losing much of what you gained on the long side. There is never a reason to use options. They are inherently inefficient. This "coverage" strategy is part of Wall Street superstition. If you don't believe me, you will have to walk the trail of tears.

I should warn you that options can distort your psychology so that you make wrong judgements about the underlying common. FORE is doing well. Forget buyouts and all the other nonsense that pervades this business. Hold the stock. It will rise and you'll make good money. If you buy options the stock will rise only so fast to keep you long, but not fast enough to undo the effect of time deterioration. The whole process is so maddening that you become unbalanced. You should never hold options, they have to be traded. Because of the need to trade, you are locked into a negative expected return game. So the trading guarantees that eventually you will fluctuate through zero capital. This is a universal experience. All who persist with the folly of trading options lose all. Stay with stock, on cash non-hedged. If you're wrong, you can always hold and you don't have extraneous forces like margin calls forcing you to make the wrong move.
