Apropos the heavy oil, I don't think the gold situation is identical, although there are parallels. What we are seeing with the large gold miners is an attempt to increase production rather than just maintain it. In years gone by, when POG fell, the mines cut back production in order to assist the gold price to rise in the face of whatever demand existed. That is why I remarked that the mines must be happy with the present price because it is apparent that, by improving efficiency even at the cost of shortening their lives, they are able to make a good profit.
