Hi Ramsey,

I have just talked to a sales rep of ours from HK. He confirmed that economic environment is bad in HK. He said that it isn't so much that people don't have money to spend, it is that people are predicting a disastrous year for 1999. Therefore, they are too scared to spend. He is predicting the HangSeng to hit 6000 next year. But he also said that sales in China is extremely strong. He is selling every thing that my company is able to provide him. And one of his purpose for coming to the US is to tell our company that we are not supplying him with enough ICs.

I think that HK's economy will be fine as long as China is growing robustly. But I seriously doubt that HK would ever be as glorious as it once were. Within the next ten years, ShangHai would over take HK as the largest financial center in Asia. And as import tarriffs drop in China, there will be less incentive for companies to go through HK distributors to sell in China, so HK can not be a middle man for much longer.

Regards,

lkj
