GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler set higher Q1 '99 output

DETROIT, Dec 15 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp., Ford
Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG are forecasting an eight
percent gain in North American car and truck production for the
first quarter of 1999.
The automakers project 10 percent higher car production to
1,448,800 units. Truck output is scheduled to be up 7 percent
to 2,049,500 for a total of 3,498,300 units.
DaimlerChrysler AG, which released its first quarter output
plans Tuesday, said it expects to build 844,300 cars and
trucks, up 5 percent from the 1998 first period.
DaimlerChrysler, the world's fifth largest automaker, said
car production is scheduled for 256,800 units, up 15 percent.
Trucks are expected to rise to 587,500.
The figures do not include M-Class production from the
Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama, but do reflect production of
23,400 light trucks from a plant in Austria.
Last week GM, the world's largest automaker, said it plans
to make 1,473,000 cars and trucks, an increase of 7 percent
from the 1998 first quarter. Car output is forecast to be 14
percent higher to 767,000. Trucks are expected to rise one
percent to 706,000.
No. 2 automaker Ford is projecting a 1 percent car output
rise to 425,000 and a 19 percent increase in trucks to 756,000
for a total forecast of 1,181,000, up 12 percent.
