"All told, very lucky: some might ascribe it to divine intervention, though I understand that most divinities don't intervene on behalf on nonbelievers. In any event, I'm glad to be alive and gladder that the family is, though coughing, yawning, laughing, sneezing, etc. all
make me feel like death might have been a desirable alternative."

Roger,
Glad to hear that all your loved ones were spared in this "accident".
Even though you are now an avowed pagan, I think you will be reminded during this Christmas of this very precious gift of safety given by the one who's birth we celebrate.

Christ died for us while all men were yet sinners, so I would say that the only true Divinity does indeed intervene in the lives of unbelievers and sinners; His whole life, death, and Resurrection demonstrated just that. From your description of the accident, it is obvious that His hand intervened by blocking serious injury and death.
Did you revert to the old Christian habit of momentarily sending thoughts of gratitude towards the throne of Him you deny? Those thoughts and moments define the meaning and essence of such an accident.

Christ does indeed express his love towards us while we are yet sinners.

Emile

Steve,
I'm glad to hear of your good fortune in a bad situation. Our families are the best part of it all.

Steve, sorry to hear about your accident. Glad to hear that you and your family are alright.

Was it a one-car accident? If not, and especially if the other guy was at fault, hate to sound like a lawyer, BUT: if you can, get photos of your car, the other car, your injuries, your wife's injuries, start keeping a diary. Record every expenditure for medical treatment and medication, all time off from work, document your medication intake, put in a short statement about your physical pain, limitations, etc. Every day. Get receipts and keep them in a special file. Keep all your medical records in there, too. And the photos.

Don't settle up with the insurance company until enough time has passed for all physical problems to surface. Until the general overall pain passes, you won't really know what, if anything, is permanent. I myself have been injured slightly in two wrecks, and permanent injury is nothing to take lightly.

You seem like a level-headed guy, you probably already know all this stuff, but people don't always think clearly when they are under stress.

Best wishes, and get well.

Steven -- Good grief! What a mess! So sorry about your accident. What a way to greet Christmas...At least, you are all in one piece. I do hope Jenny will recover soon, both from physical and (possible) psychological damage..

The treatise can wait..

Steven!
I'm just now getting around to catching up on posts and was horrified to read what happened to you! You manage to sound very calm about it, but I know it's been terrible for you all, particularly with Jenny in the hospital and always that underlying concern that something will show up later.
Is your wife staying at the hospital with Jenny?
Thanks for letting us know---it's what I hate most about the internet friends we make- too easy not to know what happens. Wish we were all closer so we could bring you some of our infamous Feelings meals--gummibear casseroles and unidentifiable frozen things from our freezers.
Take care of yourself.

Steve, i haven't been keeping up with the thread very consistently at all, and just came across penni's reference to your accident, and link to your report of it. How frightening and awful. I am so sorry! but so glad it turned out as it did, and hope Jenny is just fine now.

Truth has arisen from the earth and justice has looked down from heaven

Awake, mankind! For your sake God has become man. Awake, you who sleep, rise up from
the dead, and Christ will enlighten you. I tell you again: for your sake, God became man.
You would have suffered eternal death, had he not been born in time. Never would you have
been freed from sinful flesh, had he not taken on himself the likeness of sinful flesh. You would
have suffered everlasting unhappiness, had it not been for this mercy. You would never have
returned to life, had he not shared your death. You would have been lost if he had not hastened
'to your aid. You would have perished, had he not come.
Let us then joyfully celebrate the coming of our salvation and redemption. Let us celebrate the
festive day on which he who is the great and eternal day came from the great and endless day of
eternity into our own short day of time.
He has become our justice, our sanctification, our redemption, so that, as it is written: Let
him who glories glory in the Lord.
Truth, then, has arisen from the earth: Christ who said, I am the Truth, was born of the
Virgin. And justice looked down from heaven: because believing in this new-born child, man
is justified not by himself but by God.
Truth has arisen from the earth: because the Word was made flesh. And justice looked
down from heaven: because every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.
Truth has arisen from the earth: flesh from Mary. And justice looked down from heaven:
for man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.
Justified by faith, let us be at peace with God: for justice and peace have embraced one
another. Through our Lord Jesus Christ: for Truth has arisen from the earth. Through
whom we have access to that grace in which we stand, and our boast is in our hope of
God's glory. He does not say: "of our glory," but of God's glory: for justice has not come out
of us but has looked down from heaven. Therefore he who glories, let him glory, not in
himself, but in the Lord.
For this reason, when our Lord was born of the Virgin, the message of the angelic voices was:
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to men of good will.
For how could there be peace on earth unless Truth has arisen from the earth, that is, unless
Christ were born of our flesh? And he is our peace who made the two into one: that we might
be men of good will, sweetly linked by the bond of unity.
Let us then rejoice in this grace, so that our glorying may bear witness to our good conscience
by which we glory, not in ourselves, but in the Lord. That is why Scripture says: He is my glory,
the one who lifts up my head. For what greater grace could God have made to dawn on us
than to make his only Son become the son of man, so that a son of man might in his turn become
son of God?
Ask if this were merited; ask for its reason, for its justification, and see whether you will find any
other answer but sheer grace.

I'm glad to hear that you and your family are alright Steve. Did you ever notice how the survivors are always quoted on the news how they know that god was watching out for them. I think that it is more likely that you all survived because of the work of the scientists and engineers who learned to get off of their knees and solve the problems of car safety. Funny that I have never heard them thanked on the news.

Steve, I'm so sorry about your accident. I am reading last Thursday's posts at the moment, so forgive me for asking if you have already given an update more recently, but how is Jenny?

Just catching up with reading and lurking. Appalled to learn of your accident! If there is a God, I offer thanks to him, her, it, or them for you deliverance. Regardless, we can all thank damned good engineers and manufacturing that you and your family are still with us.
