A chess-server I play on (ICC at www.chessclub.com) has an interesting technical solution to this issue. Each user can set the level of profanity they want to be exposed to, and the system automatically stars out the appropriate offending words for that viewer.

Of course there's more scope on SI - for example, imagine a system that would star out any reference to market maker manipulations <G>.

Anyone who wishes to resolve not to use profanity on SI in '99, or to resolve, in general, to do something different in '99, can publicly proclaim as such at #Subject-24256, the '99 New Year's Resolutions thread.
