Dec 16, 1998 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- Industrial production declined in November, offset by an increase in the output of computers, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday.

That may be evidence the economy is showing some weakness in the midst of the information-technology boom.

The total output of the nation's factories, utilities, and mines fell 0.3 percent in November after expanding a modest 0.2 percent in October. Warm weather and decreased global demand dampened U.S. utilities and manufacturing. Increases in computer production offset some of the decline, the government said.

Industrial production has grown 1.5 percent since November 1997. In addition to the falling output, the nation's factories were operating at their lowest capacity in five years, 80.6 percent of their full operations.

Overall production of consumer goods inched up a mere 0.1 percent, pushed up by the 0.6 percent increase in home-computer output as other categories declined.

Manufacturing of business equipment fell 0.6 percent, which would have been worse but for the 3.1 percent boost in computers. Production of computers for business have sustained a meteoric 56.6 percent growth rate since last November.

Semiconductors and printed circuit-board production increased 3.9 percent in November and 29.5 percent over the last year.
