STUDY SEES 125,000 DVD-VIDEO PLAYERS IN EUROPEAN HOMES

12/14/98
DVD Report
(c) 1998 Phillips Business Information, Inc.

The end of 1998 will see about 125,000 DVD-Video players in European
homes, with the installed base reaching 1 million by 2000, according
to a new study by London-based trade journal Screen Digest. The study
sees the largest installed base to date in France, followed by
Germany and then the U.K.

The study, titled DVD Video: European Market Assessment and Forecast
1998-2000, also projects European sales of 1.4 million DVD- Video
titles this year, climbing to nearly 15 million in 2000. About 385
titles are on the market in Europe, including 135 movie and music
video titles from Hollywood and other international distributors,
according to the study.

Among the challenges facing the European market, according to the
study: low consumer awareness, relatively high hardware prices, and a
limited selection of software, resulting in the import of Region 1
discs into Europe. The complete study may be purchased for GBP495 or
$840.
