The current standoff is over the attempt to get documentation about Iraq's application of chemical and biological weapons on political opponents. The weapons and equipment are hidden. Other than bombing the Republican Guard, it isn't going to change anything. The purpose of the mission appears more to try to soften up Iraq for the US to support an opposition to Saddam.
